— The plain-English version
RG240 is a 240-second loaded-mode emissions test that Victoria uses to verify a vehicle still meets the Australian Design Rule (ADR) standards it was built to — even after modifications, after being imported, or after being built up from scratch.
The vehicle is strapped to a dyno that simulates a real urban + highway drive cycle. A five-gas analyser samples the exhaust every second and compares the readings against the ADR limits that apply to your vehicle's year and category.
Other states call this IM240 — the procedure is functionally identical. In Victoria, you only need it when your car goes through the Vehicle Assessment Signatory Scheme (VASS) — for modified, imported, or individually constructed vehicles. Standard, factory-spec cars don't need it.
Why it matters
Without an RG240 pass, your VASS signatory can't certify your build, you can't get a modification plate, and the car can't be legally registered. It's the last technical gate between you and a number plate.
— Who needs an RG240
If your vehicle falls outside the standard factory ADR pathway, you almost certainly need an emissions test before your VASS engineer can sign off.
Personally imported, grey-import or end-of-life-cycle imports needing emissions clearance before Victorian registration or VASS sign-off.
Skyline R34 · Supra A80 · 80-series LandCruiser · JDM rarities
Anything that changes the original ADR compliance — engine swaps, turbo conversions, aftermarket exhaust, cam upgrades, intake changes, fuel-system mods.
LS swap · turbo conversion · cat-back exhaust · stand-alone ECU
Kit cars, replicas and ICVs built up from a bare chassis. RG240 is part of the VASS engineering pathway before red-plate or full registration.
Cobra replica · Lotus 7 replica · scratch-built hot rods
Cars heading overseas to Sri Lanka, the US and other jurisdictions that require an Australian-standard emissions certificate before import clearance.
Right-hand-drive exports · classic shipments · trade exports

— The five-gas analyser
Every second of the 240-second cycle, the sampling probe pulls a live exhaust reading from the tailpipe. Five gases are tracked and compared against the applicable ADR pass band.
Carbon monoxide
Tracks rich combustion. High readings flag fuelling or catalyst issues — most common fail point on modified petrol cars.
Hydrocarbons
Unburnt fuel passing through the engine. Indicates misfires, lean conditions, leaking injectors or worn ignition components.
Oxides of nitrogen
Formed under high combustion temperatures. Critical for turbo, diesel and boost-converted vehicles — EGR and timing matter here.
Carbon dioxide
Confirms complete combustion. Sanity-check value — used alongside CO and O₂ to validate the test cycle and engine load.
Oxygen
Residual exhaust oxygen. Cross-references CO and HC to confirm AFR closed-loop behaviour and exhaust-system integrity.
— Process
Visual check, OBD scan, exhaust integrity, fuel-system check and confirmation your VASS paperwork matches the build. We flag obvious fail risks before the dyno fires up.
Vehicle is run on the dyno to bring the engine and catalytic converter to full operating temperature. A cold cat = a guaranteed fail — most rushed shops skip this.
Pre-programmed drive cycle simulating urban + highway conditions. Five-gas analyser samples the exhaust live. Results are graphed against the applicable ADR limits.
If you pass, we issue the emissions certificate the same day for your VASS signatory. If you fail, we sit down with the data — and because we tune in-house, we can usually fix it before you leave.
— Why Tuned by Apex
Our RG240 testing facility is recognised by VicRoads and operates within the Vehicle Assessment Signatory Scheme (VASS) framework. Every certificate is accepted by signatories statewide.
Many emissions facilities only handle 2WD cars. Our Mainline AWD hub dyno tests anything driven by one, two, three or four wheels. No turning trucks away.
Most testers fail you and send you elsewhere to chase the problem. We are a full custom tuning workshop. AFR off? We re-map. Lean misfire? We diagnose. One roof, one bill.
Standard passes are wrapped in under two hours. Next-day availability — no two-week queue. The certificate goes straight to your VASS engineer.
The single biggest difference
We are a full custom tuning workshop with a five-gas analyser in the same bay. If your car fails, we don't shrug and send you elsewhere — we pull up the calibration, fix the cause, and re-run the cycle. Diesel or petrol, factory or stand-alone ECU.
